This summer I decided to take a look into the world of college life. It was an easy decision since I knew what I wanted to do when I graduated but I had no idea what I wanted to do. The good thing was that it took some time to find what I was looking for.
I decided to do a brief college search of the typical first year of college student and ended up with several dozen online courses. All of them were either courses that I took or classes I took during the course of my freshman year. I found a few interesting ones like Introduction to English Literature, Introduction to Business Administration, and Introduction to Psychology. A few that were interesting were Criminal Justice and Criminal Justice Psychology.
I have no idea how to categorize these courses, but what they do do is make me think about the role of higher education in the 21st century. It’s one thing to sit and watch a stream of lectures on a computer screen, but it’s another thing to actually interact with the content. I found this by simply downloading the course materials, going to class, and actually engaging with the material.
After a few months of doing this, I found myself asking a question or two about the nature of our knowledge about the future that I probably would never have asked if I didn’t start doing this. I asked my classmates if they’ve ever had to ask, “Are you really going to die?” If they had they would probably say “Yes,” but I did not. The question was not rhetorical. I felt myself start to sweat a little bit and my heart rate speed up a little bit.
We know that we will die because we are not immortal. We will die, and we will die in a way that is not natural. This is very obvious to most people. But the question is, what is the nature of our knowledge about the future that will be handed down to us in the afterlife? We know that we will live for an eternity, but we also know that our knowledge about the future is limited.
Our knowledge is so limited because we don’t have the technology to remember it in the first place. The only way to make sense of the future is to do so from our own perspective. A knowledge that was passed on to us from our ancestors, that we can only have as a direct and immediate consequence of our actions, is simply not going to be stored in our minds.
In our case, the technology to remember the future is in the form of a video game and a smartphone app. The game is called Harvest Moon, and it’s an action game in which players are able to control different characters and build a village, in a style reminiscent of the original Japanese game. The app allows players to share their village with others on Facebook or Twitter, and lets them check out other players’ villages.
The app is also a great way to make your own little village, but it is also a place to make friends, to meet people, and to play video games. It’s a sort of community, but it’s not like the community of the original Harvest Moon game. The original Harvest Moon was a game where kids played with each other and built villages together, building houses, and fighting off monsters.
